Midweek Musings: April 13, 2023

Dear Friend,

Did you know that in some churches, the Sunday after Easter is “Holy Humor Sunday.” According to internet sources, “In the early church, the Sunday after Easter was observed by the faithful as a day of joy and laughter with parties and shenanigans to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. The custom of Bright Sunday, as it was called, came from the idea of some early church theologians that God played a joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead.”

In the spirit of Holy Humor Sunday, I offer you a Midweek Musings full of joyful and humorous offerings.

May your week be full of joy and humor!

Humor: The Missing Virtue in Our Serious Age

by Dustin Messner

In this article the author argues that we lack vision, a picture of the completed puzzle, a sense of collective mission that would allow us to be about the work of Christ with joy and lightness. I was particularly struck with the G.K. Chesterton quote that he included in the article:

“’Seriousness is not a virtue. It would be a heresy, but a much more sensible heresy, to say that seriousness is a vice. It is really a natural trend or lapse into taking one’s self gravely, because it is the easiest thing to do… For solemnity flows out of men naturally; but laughter is a leap. It is easy to be heavy: hard to be light. Satan fell by the force of gravity.’

“You see, while I understand the desire to take the issues being discussed seriously, I fear we’re in danger of taking ourselves too seriously. We’re in danger, as Chesterton said, of succumbing to the same force which brought Satan down – our own sense of gravitas.”

The Worrier’s Prayer

Dear Lord,
Help me to relax about insignificant details, beginning tomorrow at 7:41:23 a.m. EST.
Help me to consider people’s feelings, even if most of them are hypersensitive.
Help me to take responsibility for the consequences of my actions,
even though they’re usually not my fault.
Help me to not try to run everything – but, if you need some help, please feel free to ask me.
Help me to be more laid back, and help me to do it exactly right.
Help me to take things more seriously, especially laughter, parties, and dancing.
Give me patience, and I mean right now!
Help me not be a perfectionist. (Did I spell that correctly?)
Help me to finish everything I sta
Help me to keep my mind on one thing … oh, look, a bird … at a time.
Help me to do only what I can, and trust you for the rest. And would you mind putting that in writing?
Keep me open to others’ ideas, misguided though they may be.
Help me follow established procedures. Hey, wait … this is wrong …
Help me slow down andnotrushthroughwhatido.
Thank you, Lord.

Amen
