Midweek Musings: August 21, 2025

Dear Friend,

We spent last week at a lake in southern Michigan with my parents. Probably all I need to do is show you the picture above to convey my feelings about the week. We do this every year, though we often try new lakes, and it is always one of my favorite weeks of the year. I know we live right near a lake here in Racine, but there’s something about being on the shore of a small lake (a shallow lake with warm water!) that resets my sense of myself and life. Plus, there’s nothing so great as the feeling of diving off a boat or dock into a lake of warm water.

May these final weeks of summer fill you with the peace and invitation of a warm lake!

Sometimes Love Looks Like a Potato

by Jeff Chu

So many of us get caught up in the news and the exhaustion and need of the world. It can warp our perspective. I appreciated this reminder that sometimes we need to step outside, do something else, and remember that we are loved.

“All I really have to say to you today is this: Remember that you’re loved. And that love, along with all its accompanying goodness, isn’t something to be hoarded or held apart. This balm like no other is to be shared as lavishly as we can.”

Dusty Bibles

Josiah Queen

We got dust on our Bibles
Brand new iPhones
No wonder why we feel this way

Hey, how you been?
It’s been a while and I’m just checking in
I miss the way things used to be back in 2017
And I just miss my friend

Hey, I’ve been fine
I’ve been struggling to find some peace of mind
It’s the problem of our nation and in our generation
We’re too busy and can’t find the time
Are we busy or is it all a lie

We got dust on our Bibles
Brand new iPhones
No wonder why we feel this way

We walk with our eyes closed blind leading blind folks
I’m done with those idols and dusty Bibles

We only get this one life
I don’t want to sit and watch it pass me by
I’m so done being complacent
There ain’t no replacement
For a life in the light of your way
Oh I’m done, had enough of my way

How Does a Pipe Organ Actually Work?

Anna Lapwood | Classic FM

Maybe it’s just me, but I found this video fascinating. Also, I now have 1) an ever greater respect for people who know how to play the organ and 2) a better understanding of why there are so few of them these days!

Chinook Psalter

May all I say and all I think
   be in harmony with thee,
God within me, God beyond me,
   maker of the trees.

In me be the windswept truth of shorepine,
   fragrance of balsam and spruce,
      the grace of hemlock.
In me the truth of douglas fir, straight, tall,
strong-trunked land hero of fireproof bark.
Sheltering tree of life, cedar’s truth be mine,
cypress truth, juniper aroma, strength of yew.

May all I say and all I think
   be in harmony with thee,
God within me, God beyond me,
   maker of the trees.

In me be the truth of streamlover willow
   soil-giving alder
hazel of sweet nuts, wisdom-branching oak.
In me the joy of crabapple, greatmaple, vinemaple,
   cleaning cascara and lovely dogwood.
And the gracious truth of the copper branched arbutus,
   bright with colour and fragrance,
be with me on the Earth.

May all I say and all I think
   be in harmony with thee,
God within me, God beyond me,
   maker of the trees.

Amen.
